"Smokin" Joe Kilroy (born 21 June 1960) is a famous Australian former rugby league player. He played in the 1980s and 1990s. Joe was known for his incredible speed on the field.

He played as a winger or fullback. Joe represented Queensland in the exciting State of Origin games. He also played for several club teams. These included Brothers and Northern Suburbs in Brisbane. Later, he joined the Brisbane Broncos in the Sydney Rugby League Premiership.

Joe also played for the Halifax team in England. He helped them win the Rugby Football League Championship in 1985–86. This was a big surprise for many fans!

Joe's Early Life

When Joe Kilroy was two years old, his mother sadly passed away. He then spent 11 years growing up in the care of the Sisters of Mercy at Nudgee. Later, he attended the BoysTown school.

Playing Rugby League

Joe Kilroy started his football career with the Northern Suburbs club in Brisbane. In 1980, he was named the best player in the Brisbane Rugby League grand final. His team, Norths, won against Souths.

Later, Joe played for Brothers. He even scored two tries for them in the 1987 BRL grand final. The year 1988 was very special for Joe. He played in the very first game for the Brisbane Broncos. He also played in the famous Rugby League State of Origin series that year.

Joe earned the nickname 'Smokin' Joe. This was because of his amazing speed when he ran with the ball on the football field.

After His Playing Days

After retiring from playing, Joe Kilroy continued to be recognized for his skills. He was named in the 4 BC Brisbane Rugby League's Team of the 1980s. This team featured the best players from that decade.

In 2008, Joe was chosen as a winger for an all-time greatest team for the Norths Devils. In 1980, he was also the runner-up for the Brisbane Rugby League Rothman's Medal. This award goes to the best player in the league.
