"Smokin" Joe Kilroy (born 21 June 1960) is a famous Australian former rugby league player. He played in the 1980s and 1990s. Joe was known for his incredible speed on the field, which earned him the nickname 'Smokin' Joe.

He represented Queensland in the important State of Origin series. Joe played for several clubs, including Brothers and Northern Suburbs in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership. He also played for the Brisbane Broncos in the Sydney Rugby League Premiership.

Joe Kilroy also played in England for the Halifax team. He was a key player when Halifax surprisingly won the Rugby Football League Championship in the 1985–86 season. He mostly played as a wing or fullback.

Joe Kilroy was born on June 21, 1960. When he was only two years old, his mother passed away in a car accident. After this, he spent 11 years living with the Sisters of Mercy at Nudgee.

Joe Kilroy started his football journey playing for the Northern Suburbs club in Brisbane. In 1980, he had an amazing performance in the Brisbane Rugby League grand final. His team won against Souths, and Joe was named the best player of the match.

He later joined Brothers and played in the 1987 BRL grand final. In that game, he scored two tries, showing his skill. The year 1988 was a very big one for Joe. He played in the very first game for the Brisbane Broncos, a new team at the time. He also played in the prestigious State of Origin series that year.

In 1983, Joe Kilroy was considered one of the best fullbacks in the world. He continued to play for the Broncos, even returning for a game in 1991 after a break from the sport.

Achievements and Recognition

After his playing career, Joe Kilroy continued to be recognized for his contributions to rugby league. He was named in the 4 BC Brisbane Rugby League's Team of the 80s. This team honors the best players from the 1980s in Brisbane rugby league.

In 2008, Joe was also chosen to be on the wing of an all-time greatest team for the Norths Devils. This shows how important he was to that club. In 1980, he was the runner-up for the Brisbane Rugby League Rothman's Medal, an award for the best player in the league.
