Joe Savikataaq (born around 1960) is a Canadian politician. He was the fifth leader, or Premier, of Nunavut from 2018 to 2021. He was chosen as Premier by the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut on June 14, 2018. This happened after the previous Premier, Paul Quassa, lost a special vote called a "no-confidence vote."

Political Career
Becoming a Member of the Assembly
Joe Savikataaq was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in 2013. This assembly is like the parliament for the territory of Nunavut. He represented the area known as Arviat South. He was elected again for the same area in 2017.
Roles in Government
Before becoming Premier, Savikataaq held many important jobs in the government. He was the Deputy Premier of Nunavut. He also served as the Minister of Economic Development and Transportation. This role meant he helped with business and travel in Nunavut. He was also the Minister of Community and Government Services. This job involved helping local communities. Lastly, he was the Minister of Energy.
Serving as Premier
Savikataaq was chosen as Premier on June 14, 2018. He continued to serve until November 2021. After the 2021 election, P.J. Akeeagok was selected to become the new Premier. This decision was made during the Nunavut Leadership Forum on November 17, 2021.
Personal Life
Before Politics
Before he entered politics, Joe Savikataaq worked for almost 30 years. He was a conservation officer. This means he helped protect wildlife and natural resources. He also enjoys hobbies like scuba diving and flying small airplanes.
Family Life
Joe Savikataaq is married to Susan Savikataaq. They have three children named Joe Jr., Wendy, and Jamie. He is also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren. His son, Joe Savikataaq Jr., became the mayor of Arviat in March 2020. This happened after the death of the previous mayor, Bob Leonard.
