Nellie Taptaqut Kusugak (born in 1955) is a Canadian educator. She served as the fifth commissioner of Nunavut from June 2015 to June 2020. The Commissioner of Nunavut is like the Queen's representative in the territory.

Early Life and Education
Nellie Kusugak grew up in Rankin Inlet, a community in Nunavut. She became a teacher and worked for about 20 years. She taught in both Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people, and English.
Becoming a Teacher
In 1996, Nellie earned a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree. She got this degree through a special program for teachers in Nunavut. This program was offered by Nunavut Arctic College and McGill University. Before becoming a Deputy Commissioner, she taught adults at Nunavut Arctic College in Rankin Inlet.
Political Career and Public Service
Nellie Kusugak held important roles in the government of Nunavut. She served as the Deputy Commissioner of Nunavut before becoming the Commissioner.
Deputy Commissioner Role
Nellie Kusugak was the Deputy Commissioner of Nunavut from 2010 to 2015. She was chosen for this role by the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Chuck Strahl. She officially started on February 25, 2010.
For a short time in 2010, Nellie Kusugak was the acting Commissioner of Nunavut. This happened when the previous Commissioner's term ended. She served in this acting role from April 11, 2010, until a new Commissioner was appointed about a month later.
As the Commissioner of Nunavut, Nellie Kusugak represented all the people living in the territory. She had several important official duties, including:
- Giving approval to new laws passed by the legislative assembly.
- Swearing in new cabinet ministers, who are like government leaders.
- Signing important government documents.
Personal Life
Nellie Kusugak was married to Jose Kusugak. He was a well-known leader who used to be the president of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated. This organization works to protect the rights of Inuit people in Nunavut.
Honours and Awards
Nellie Kusugak has received special recognition for her service.
She is a member of the Order of Nunavut. This is a high honour given to people who have made great contributions to the territory.
