Joseph Turkel (born July 15, 1927 – died June 27, 2022) was an American actor. He was known for playing interesting characters in movies. He appeared in famous films like The Shining and Blade Runner. He also worked with director Stanley Kubrick three times.

Early Life and Military Service

Joseph Turkel was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 15, 1927. His father, Benjamin Turkel, was a tailor. His mother, Gazella, was a homemaker and sometimes sang opera. His parents had moved to the U.S. from Poland.

He had two brothers, Harold and David. When he was seventeen, Turkel joined the United States Army. He served in Europe during World War II.

Acting Career Highlights

Turkel's first movie was City Across the River in 1948. He became known as a "character actor." This means he often played unique or memorable supporting roles instead of the main hero.

Working with Stanley Kubrick

Joe Turkel worked with the famous director Stanley Kubrick three times. This is quite rare for an actor!

  • In The Killing (1956), he played a character named Tiny.
  • In Paths of Glory (1957), he was Private Arnaud.
  • In The Shining (1980), he played Lloyd, the ghostly bartender. This role is one of his most famous.

After retiring, he lived in Southern California and wrote screenplays. He once said that Paths of Glory was his favorite movie he acted in. Before he passed away, he wrote a book about his life called The Misery of Success.

Personal Life

Joe Turkel was married to Anita Josephine Cacciatore. They had two sons together. He was interested in politics and believed in progressive ideas.

He passed away on June 27, 2022, at the age of 94. He died from liver failure in Santa Monica, California.
