Corporal Joel Halliwell VC (born December 29, 1881 – died June 14, 1958) was a very brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross. This is the highest award for bravery. It is given to soldiers in the British and Commonwealth forces. It honors those who show amazing courage when facing the enemy.

Joel Halliwell: A War Hero

Joel Halliwell was a lance-corporal in the British Army. This is a junior leadership rank. He was part of the 11th Battalion, The Lancashire Fusiliers. He was 37 years old during World War I. On May 27, 1918, he performed an incredible act of bravery. This happened at Muscourt, France. It was during a big battle called the Third Battle of the Aisne.

His Amazing Bravery

During the battle, Joel's army unit was pulling back. The enemy was very close. Joel saw a loose enemy horse. He bravely rode it into "No Man's Land." This was the dangerous area between the two armies. He went under heavy rifle and machine gun fire. He rescued a wounded soldier from this dangerous spot.

He did this amazing act several times! He managed to save one officer and nine other soldiers. He tried to save another wounded person. But the enemy had advanced too close. His actions were truly magnificent. He was a great example to everyone who saw him.

The Victoria Cross and Later Life

For his outstanding bravery and dedication, Joel Halliwell was awarded the Victoria Cross. He passed away when he was 76 years old. His Victoria Cross medal is kept by his family in Middleton, Greater Manchester. Joel Halliwell is buried at Boarshaw Cemetery. His gravestone has a special inscription. It reads 'For Valour' and 'These Are Deeds That Should Not Pass Away, And Names That Must Not Wither'.

In 2014, Joel Halliwell and his family appeared on a TV show. It was the BBC program The Antiques Roadshow. They were on special episodes about World War I. Joel's heroic story was shared with many people. His family also visited the grave of his brother, Tom. Tom had been killed in 1916 during the war.
