Joel Romelo, born on April 3, 1989, is a former professional rugby league player from Australia. He played for several teams in the NRL. These teams included the Penrith Panthers, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, and Melbourne Storm. Joel mainly played as a hooker. He could also play as a five-eighth or halfback. Joel has both Indigenous Australian and Italian heritage.

Early Life and Junior Football

Joel Romelo was born in Darwin, Northern Territory. He started playing junior rugby league there. His first team was the Nightcliff Dragons in the Darwin Rugby League.

When he was 12 years old, Joel moved to Brisbane, Queensland. He went to Redcliffe State High School. He kept playing junior football for the Redcliffe Dolphins. Later, he was signed by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

Professional Playing Career

Joel Romelo played for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks' junior team. After that, he joined the Penrith Panthers.

Time with Penrith Panthers

In 2008, Joel signed with the Penrith Panthers. He played for their Toyota Cup team in 2008 and 2009. During this time, he scored 22 tries in 41 games.

Joel made his NRL debut for the Panthers in 2009. This was in Round 8 against the Canberra Raiders. He played two more games in the top league that year. At the end of 2009, Joel was named in the NYC Team of the Year. This team highlights the best young players.

Playing for Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

In March 2010, Joel Romelo signed a contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He first played for their reserve-grade team in the NSW Cup.

Joel then made his debut for the Bulldogs in Round 11 of the 2010 NRL season. This game was special because it was against his old team, the Penrith Panthers. In the 2012 NRL season, Joel played 13 games for Canterbury. The club had a great year and won the Minor Premiership. However, Joel did not play in the team's final games or the 2012 NRL Grand Final. The Bulldogs lost that Grand Final to Melbourne.

Later Career with Melbourne Storm

On January 23, 2014, Joel Romelo signed a one-year contract with the Melbourne Storm. He played two games for them that year. After his time with the Storm, Joel signed with the Queensland Cup team Eastern Suburbs Tigers. He played for them full-time in the 2015 season.

Representative Matches

Joel Romelo also played for the Queensland Schoolboys team. This team represents the best school-aged players from Queensland.

In 2011, Joel was chosen to be part of the Italy squad. This team played in the qualifying matches for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
