Johanna Gerarda Theodora van Eybergen (also spelled van Eijbergen) was a talented Dutch artist. She was born on April 17, 1865, in Ambon and passed away on May 13, 1950, in The Hague. Johanna was special because she focused on applied arts and design, especially creating beautiful Art Nouveau pieces on metal. For a long time, she was the only Dutch woman artist working with metal design.

Becoming an Artist

Johanna van Eybergen loved art from a young age. She studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. From 1887 to 1893, she learned about painting and how to design with metal. This training helped her become a skilled artist.

Designing with Metal

After her studies, Johanna started working with metal. Between 1904 and 1909, she worked at a coppersmith workshop. This workshop was part of the G. Dikkers & Co. company in Hengelo. Here, she created amazing Art Nouveau designs. Art Nouveau is a style of art that uses flowing lines and natural shapes. Johanna often used insects and other nature themes in her metal decorations. Her work was unique and showed her great talent.

Teaching and Later Life

After working with metal designs, Johanna van Eybergen became a teacher. From 1909 until 1930, she taught drawing in Alkmaar. She shared her artistic knowledge with many students. Johanna was also a member of the Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst (V.A.N.K.). This was a Dutch association for craft and craft art. It showed her dedication to the world of art and design.
