Johannes Hoops (born July 20, 1865 – died April 14, 1949) was an important German scholar. He studied languages and history, especially English. He became a professor of English language and literature at the University of Heidelberg.
Hoops is most famous for creating and publishing the first edition of a huge encyclopedia. This work was called Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde. It covered many topics about ancient Germanic cultures.

His Early Life and Education
Johannes Hoops was born in Bremen, Germany, on July 20, 1865. When he was young, he first studied math and science. He went to universities in Jena and Freiburg. Later, he changed his focus to languages and history, which is called philology.
In 1889, he earned his PhD from the University of Freiburg. His special project, called a dissertation, was about old English plant names.
His Career as a Professor
From 1893 to 1896, Hoops taught at the University of Tübingen. In 1896, he moved to the University of Heidelberg. There, he became an Associate Professor of English language. By 1902, he was promoted to a full Professor.
Throughout his career, Hoops was involved with many academic journals. These journals published articles about English language and literature. He also became a member of important academic groups. In 1932, he joined the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Later, in 1939, he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. After World War II, he even served as the head of the University of Heidelberg for a short time.
His Important Research
Johannes Hoops spent a lot of time researching different subjects. He was very interested in ancient plants and their names. He also studied the famous old English poem, Beowulf. Another main area of his research was Germanic Antiquity. This means he studied the history, culture, and languages of ancient Germanic peoples.
His biggest achievement was publishing the first edition of the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde. This large encyclopedia was published between 1911 and 1919. It became a key resource for anyone studying ancient Germanic history and culture.
