Johannes Jelgerhuis learned to paint from his father, Rienk Jelgerhuis. He also studied with another artist named Pieter Pietersz Barbiers. These teachers helped him become a skilled painter.
His Acting Career
In 1808, Johannes Jelgerhuis started working as an actor. He performed at the famous Stadsschouwburg (Amsterdam) theater in Amsterdam. He loved acting so much that he even wrote a special book. This book was an instruction guide for other actors, and it had pictures to help them learn!
Later, in 1820, he began teaching acting classes in Amsterdam. He invited a well-known actress, Johanna Wattier, to help him teach. Together, they shared their knowledge of the stage.
His Painting Style
Johannes Jelgerhuis was also very good at painting. He was famous for his detailed paintings of building interiors and architectural scenes. He had a great eye for perspective, which means he could make things look very real and deep on a flat canvas.
One of his famous paintings shows the inside of a bookshop. This painting is now part of the collection at the Rijksmuseum. He also painted many scenes of different cities. These included places like Delft, Rotterdam, Ghent, and Amsterdam.
