Johannes Schilling (born June 23, 1828, died March 21, 1910) was a famous German sculptor. He created many impressive statues and monuments. His art can be seen in different cities, showing his great talent.

A Sculptor's Journey

Johannes Schilling was the youngest of five children. His family moved to Dresden when he was just one year old. He grew up there. At age six, he started private school. When he was fourteen, he joined the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. There, he learned drawing from Karl Gottlieb Peschel.

After finishing his studies in 1845, he became a top student. He worked in the studio of the famous sculptor Ernst Rietschel. In 1851 and 1852, Johannes traveled to Berlin. He continued his art studies with Christian Daniel Rauch and Friedrich Drake.

In 1852, he came back to Dresden. He worked in the studios of Ernst Julius Hähnel. From 1854 to 1856, he went on a study trip to Rome. This trip helped him learn even more about art. Finally, in 1857, he opened his own art studio. That same year, he married Louise Arnold.

In 1868, Johannes Schilling became a Professor at the Academy. He taught there until he passed away. By 1888, he was so well-known that a museum was built to show his art models. His son, Rudolf Schilling, who was an architect, designed it. Sadly, this museum was destroyed in 1945. Most of Dresden was also destroyed during the fire bombing of Dresden.

After Johannes Schilling's death, his hometown of Mittweida was meant to build a museum for his legacy. These plans were delayed by World War I. His wish was finally fulfilled in 2005. That is when the Schilling House was established.
