John Orfeur Aglionby was an important church leader. He was born on March 16, 1884, and passed away on May 15, 1963. He served as the Bishop of Accra in Ghana for many years during the early to mid-1900s.

Early Life and Education

John Aglionby went to school at Westminster School in London. Later, he studied at The Queen's College, Oxford University. After finishing his studies, he became a priest in 1911. His first job was working as a curate, which is like an assistant priest, at Holy Trinity Church in South Shields.

Serving in World War I

In 1915, John Aglionby joined the army during World War I. He first served as a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps, which is the army's medical team. About six months later, he was interviewed to become an army chaplain. Chaplains are like spiritual guides for soldiers.

Even though he had different religious views than some others in the chaplaincy, he was chosen for the role. He was sent to France to help the soldiers there. For his bravery and service, he received the Military Cross award on June 4, 1917. His brother, William, was also an army chaplain and received the same award later.

Becoming a Bishop

After the war, in 1917, John Aglionby became the Vicar of Monkwearmouth. He stayed there until 1924. That year, he was chosen to become the Bishop of Accra. This meant he was a senior leader in the Anglican Church in Ghana.

Helping Libraries in Ghana

Bishop Aglionby strongly believed that everyone should have access to books. He was a big supporter of starting a library service in Ghana. In 1928, he offered his own collection of books to help start a library. Later, in the 1930s, he even used his own money to set up the first library location. However, this early effort did not last.

He continued to help, and in 1945, a new library project began. The Aglionby Library was officially opened in Accra in November 1946. It was named after him because of his dedication to helping people read and learn.

Retirement

In 1951, John Aglionby retired from his role as Bishop. He moved to Orpington in England. By this time, he had earned a special degree called a Doctor of Divinity (DD). He passed away in 1963.
