John Alexander Stewart (born October 19, 1846 – died December 27, 1933) was a smart Scottish writer, teacher, and thinker. He taught at Oxford University for many years. He was a professor at Christ Church, Oxford and later at Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

Stewart was known as a top expert on the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. His most famous books were Notes on the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle (1892) and The Myths of Plato (1905).

Stewart's Early Life and Education

John Alexander Stewart was born in Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. This was on October 19, 1846. He was the oldest son of Rev. Archibald Stewart.

He went to Edinburgh University and then to Lincoln College, Oxford. In 1868, he won a special award called the Newdigate Prize. This prize was for his English poem, 'The Catacombs'. He even read his poem at a theater in Oxford.

Stewart did very well in his studies. He earned top grades in Classical Moderations in 1868. He also got top grades in Greats in 1870. Three years later, he received his Master of Arts (MA) degree.

Becoming a Professor at Oxford

After finishing his studies, Stewart became a Senior Student at Christ Church. He held this important position from 1870 to 1875. In 1875, he married Helen J. Macmillan.

He continued to teach at Christ Church as a classical lecturer until 1882. He also worked as a tutor and philosophy lecturer until 1897.

Stewart's Work and Legacy

Over the next ten years, Stewart became very famous. He was seen as a leading expert on the ideas of Aristotle. Aristotle was a very important philosopher from ancient Greece.

Stewart wrote several important books. These included the two-volume Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle (1892). He also wrote The Myths of Plato (1905). He even wrote articles for the Encyclopædia Britannica.

In 1897, he became the White's Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford. He also became a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. His wife, Helen, passed away in 1925. Stewart retired from his professorship two years later, in 1927. He died in Oxford on December 27, 1933.
