He updated this book in 1830 during a big debate called the 'voluntary church' controversy. This debate was about whether churches should be funded by the government or by their own members. In 1828, John Ballantyne released the first part of his book, Examination of the Human Mind. This book explored how people think and understand things. He planned to write two more parts, but they were never finished. His ideas in this book were similar to those of other thinkers like Thomas Reid and Dugald Stewart. He also shared some different views from another philosopher, Thomas Brown.
