John Benjamin Heath (born June 6, 1790 – died January 16, 1879) was a very important person in the world of banking. He even became the Governor of the Bank of England from 1845 to 1847! He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, which means he was a respected scholar.

Early Life and Education

John Benjamin Heath was born in 1790. His father, also named John Heath, was a merchant. His grandfather, Benjamin Heath, was a well-known scholar. Young John Benjamin went to a famous school called Harrow School.

His Career in Banking

Just like his father, John Benjamin Heath became a very successful merchant in London. His hard work led him to important roles at the Bank of England.

He was first chosen to be the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from 1842 to 1845. After that, he took over from William Cotton to become the main Governor. He held this top position from 1845 to 1847. After his time as Governor, William Robinson took his place.

Important Roles and Honors

John Benjamin Heath was recognized for his knowledge and contributions. In 1832, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. This means he was part of a group that studied history and old objects. Later, in 1843, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honor for people who have done important work in science or knowledge.

He also had a special job for his country. He was appointed as the Consul General to the King of Sardinia. This meant he represented Britain in the Kingdom of Sardinia (which is now part of Italy). In 1867, he was even given the title of a Baron in the Kingdom of Italy.

When he passed away in 1879, John Benjamin Heath was buried in Highgate Cemetery.

Family Life

John Benjamin Heath married Sophia Bland. Her father was a doctor named Robert Bland. Sophia's brother, William Bland, became a famous pioneer in Australia.
