Early Life and Education

John Berriman was born in 1691. His father, also named John Berriman, was an apothecary in London. An apothecary was like a pharmacist who prepared and sold medicines. John also had a brother named William Berriman.

John went to St Edmund Hall, Oxford, a famous university. He started his studies there on May 11, 1714. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in 1718. Two years later, in 1720, he earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree.

Career as a Clergyman

After finishing his education, John Berriman became a clergyman. He worked for many years in London. He was the rector of two churches: St Olave, Silver Street, and St Alban, Wood Street. A rector is the main priest in charge of a church.

Published Works

John Berriman was also a writer. In 1722, he published a sermon. A sermon is a speech given by a religious leader, usually in a church. His sermon was called The Case of Naboth considered and compared with that of the Royal Martyr. It was based on a story from the Bible.

In 1741, he published another important work. It was called Θεός ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκὶ, or a critical dissertation on 1 Tim. iii. 16. This book was based on his Moyer Lectures from 1737–1738. These lectures were a special series of talks about religious topics.

John Berriman also helped publish other people's works. In 1751, he edited his brother William Berriman's book, Christian Doctrines explained in Forty Sermons. Later, in 1758, he wrote an introduction for Charles Wheatly's book, Fifty Sermons.
