John Berry (born around 1619 – died around 1712) was an English colonist. He moved from the island of Barbados to what is now New Jersey. He became an important landowner, a military officer, and a leader. He served as the Deputy Governor of the Proprietary Colony of New Jersey. A proprietary colony was like a large area of land given to one or more people (called proprietors) by the King. These proprietors then governed the colony.

Life as a Leader

After the British took control of the Dutch area called New Netherland in 1664, a new colony was formed: New Jersey. The governor of New Jersey, Philip Carteret, gave land to Captain John Berry. This land was in an area once known as Achter Kol.

John Berry moved to this new land. He named it "New Barbadoes" because he had lived in Barbados before. This land was located between the Hackensack River and the Saddle River. Today, this area is part of Bergen County, New Jersey.

From 1672 to 1673, John Berry held an important job. He was the Deputy Governor of New Jersey. He took on this role while Governor Philip Carteret was away in England.

Later, John Berry continued to serve the colony. He was a member of the East New Jersey Provincial Council until 1692. This council helped to govern the colony.

Family and Lasting Mark

John Berry was married to a woman named Francina. They had at least five children together. Their children included Richard, Francina, Sarah, Hannah, and John Berry.

What He Left Behind

John Berry's name lives on in New Jersey. A stream in the New Jersey Meadowlands is called Berrys Creek. This creek is named after him. Also, his family owned a historic building known as the Yereance–Berry House.
