John Boswell (1710–1780) was a Scottish doctor. He was a very important leader at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He served as both their Treasurer and President. He lived in Edinburgh, Scotland. A place called Boswell's Court in Edinburgh is named after him.
Early Life and Education
John Boswell was born in 1710. His father was James Boswell. James was the seventh laird of Auchinleck.
John decided to study medicine. He went to Leiden University in the Netherlands. He finished his studies in 1736. For his graduation, he wrote a special paper. This paper was all about a substance called amber.
Career as a Physician
After his studies, John Boswell became a physician. He joined the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. This college is a group for doctors in Scotland.
He became the Treasurer of the college in 1748. He held this important job until 1763. There was a short break in his service during 1756. Later, in 1770, he was chosen for an even higher role. He became the President of the college.
Later Life and Legacy
John Boswell passed away in 1780. His nephew was James Boswell. James was a famous writer. He wrote about his uncle, John.
James remembered John as a very smart person. He said John knew many things. He also had good taste in art and ideas. John was also a very loving and caring person.
