John Boultbee (born 1753, died 1812) was a talented English artist. He was famous for painting horses and other sports scenes. John was born in a place called Osgathorpe, in Leicestershire, England. He later passed away in Liverpool.

John had a twin brother, Thomas, who was also a painter. They both went to a special art school called the Royal Academy Schools in 1775. This was when a famous artist named Sir Joshua Reynolds was in charge. John showed six of his paintings at the Royal Academy. His first painting, A landscape, was shown in 1776. Later, in 1788, he showed two horse portraits.

John Boultbee was very much liked by George III, who was the King of England at the time. The King asked John to paint many portraits of his horses. To make it easier for John to paint, the King even gave him a home in Windsor Great Park.

His Artistic Style

John Boultbee was inspired by other great artists. He learned a lot from the work of George Stubbs and Sawrey Gilpin. These artists were also known for their amazing animal paintings.

Where He Lived and Worked

Later in his life, John Boultbee lived and worked in different cities. He spent time in Derby and Leicestershire. He also lived in Chester before finally moving to Liverpool. He passed away in Liverpool in 1812.
