Life of John Bowie Sr.
John Bowie Sr. was born in Scotland in 1688. He later moved to colonial Maryland between 1705 and 1706. He settled near a place called Nottingham, Prince George's County, Maryland, close to the Patuxent River.
Building a New Home
In 1707, John Bowie Sr. married Mary Mulliken. Together, they started a large colonial home called Brookridge near Nottingham. They also bought a big piece of land known as "Brooke's Reserve." This land was about two miles from Nottingham.
They bought this land for their son, Captain William Bowie, when he turned twenty-one. A large brick house called Mattaponi was built there. Later, another house was built on the same spot. This land eventually became known by the name of the house, Mattaponi.
