Uncovering Ancient History at Nottingham
The Nottingham archaeological site is found on a raised area near the Patuxent River. This is close to Upper Marlboro in Prince George's County, Maryland. Archaeologists have found amazing clues here about over 5,000 years of history! These clues date from around 6000 BC (the Middle Archaic period) all the way to AD 1600 (the Late Woodland period).
What Did People Live Like in Ancient Nottingham?
One exciting discovery is a large collection of items from the Middle Woodland period. This is called the Selby Bay component. There are also many findings from the Late Woodland period, around AD 1550–1600. Some experts think this might be the village of Mattpament. This village was shown on John Smith's map from 1608. These findings help us understand how people lived long ago.
Nottingham's Colonial Beginnings
During the colonial period, families began to settle in the Nottingham area. The Bowie family was one of these early groups. They built several homes here. One famous home they built was called "Mattaponi".
