John Brady (MP) facts for kids
John Brady (1812–1887) was an Irish doctor, a person who owned land (called a landlord), and a politician who supported Irish independence. He was from County Leitrim in Ireland.
John Brady was born in County Cavan. His parents were Tobias and Margaret Brady. He became a medical doctor and was part of important medical groups: the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Surgeons. These groups are for highly trained doctors.
He lived in different places, including London, Cambridgeshire, and Rugby, Warwickshire. By the 1870s, he owned more than 2,000 acres of land in County Leitrim. This land was mostly in an area called the Poor Law Union of Bawnboy, which helped people in need. He also owned land near Cloone and Mohill.
In 1847, John Brady married Sarah Rayner from Ely, Cambridgeshire. They had two daughters.
Becoming a Politician
John Brady became a politician in 1852. At the general election that year, people voted for him to become a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the country's parliament.
Representing Leitrim
Brady was elected as a "Tenant Right" candidate. This meant he supported the rights of farmers who rented land. He became one of the two MPs for Leitrim.
Years in Parliament
John Brady was very popular. He was re-elected five more times in later elections. He served as an MP for Leitrim for a long time, 27 years in total! He stopped being an MP in 1879 because he became unwell.
Later Life and Death
John Brady passed away in late March 1887. He died at his home near Rugby.
