John Bridges (born 1610) was an English politician who served in the House of Commons in 1654 and 1656. He was a soldier for the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Family

John Bridges was born in 1610. He was the oldest son of John Bridges, a lawyer from Alcester, Warwickshire, and his wife Elizabeth Holyoake. His family had lived in Worcestershire since 1558.

A Soldier in the Civil War

John Bridges was an active soldier for the Parliament during the English Civil War. In April 1644, he helped deliver supplies to Gloucester when it was being attacked by the Royalist army.

His bravery was noticed! In May 1644, the House of Commons praised him for his "great services." He was then made the Governor of Warwick Castle and Town. A governor was in charge of protecting the castle and the area around it.

Bridges became a Colonel, leading a group of soldiers. He also helped during the siege of Worcester, which was a long military attack to capture the city. In July 1646, he was one of the officials who accepted Worcester's surrender. He continued to be the Governor of Warwick Castle until at least 1649.

Serving in Parliament

After his military service, John Bridges became involved in politics. In 1654, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Worcestershire. This meant he represented the people of Worcestershire in the English Parliament.

In 1655, he was sent to Ireland for special service. The next year, in 1656, he again served in Parliament, this time representing areas in Ireland like Sligo and Roscommon.

In 1657, while he was the Governor of Kilmalloch in Ireland, he asked for payment for his past services. He was later given £100 for his work in Ireland.

Later Life

After the English monarchy was restored in 1660, some old claims were made against John Bridges regarding goods from the late King. However, in 1663, he was cleared of these claims.

Family Life

John Bridges married Mary Beale in 1635. She was the daughter of Bartholomew Beale from Shropshire. His grandson, Sir Brook Bridges, 1st Baronet, later became a baronet, which is a special title of honor.
