John Browne's Life at Oxford

Starting His Journey

John Browne was born in 1687 in Yorkshire, England. He was the sixth son in his family. When he was 17 years old, on May 23, 1704, he started studying at University College, Oxford.

John was a very good student. He earned special scholarships called "Exhibitioner" awards in 1705 and 1708. These awards helped him pay for his studies. Later, in 1711, he was chosen to be a "Skirlaw Fellow," which meant he was a senior member of the college.

Leading University College

After finishing his studies, John Browne became a "Fellow" at University College. He worked there from 1711 to 1739. During this time, he had many important jobs. He was a Dean, which meant he helped manage the college. He also taught Greek and was the college's Registrar, keeping important records. He even tutored many students, helping them with their learning.

Around 1714, John Browne also took on a role as a priest in a place called Long Compton in Warwickshire. Later, in 1738, he became an "Archdeacon" in Northampton, which is a senior position in the church. In 1743, he became a "Canon" at Peterborough Cathedral, another church role.

In 1745, John Browne became the "Master" of University College. This meant he was the main leader of the college.

Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University

In 1753, John Browne was chosen to be the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. This is a very important job, as it means he was in charge of the whole university for a period. While he was Vice-Chancellor, he helped choose the design for the "Oxford Almanack." This was a special calendar that showed King Alfred, who people at the time believed had founded University College. The picture showed King Alfred in front of a famous part of the college called the Radcliffe Quad.

A Special Gift: His Books

When John Browne passed away, he left all his books to the Master of University College. He wanted the books to stay with the college's leader and future leaders.

At first, his books were kept in a room on the ground floor of the Radcliffe Quad. But later, when a new house was built for the Master, the books were moved there. Today, they are still displayed in the dining room, making a beautiful backdrop with their fitted bookshelves.

John Browne died on August 7, 1764.
