Early Life and Education

Sir John Burland was born in a town called Wells in Somerset, England. His birthday was July 10, 1724. He was the oldest son of John Burland and Elizabeth Morris.

He went to school at Sherborne School. After that, he studied at Balliol College, Oxford, which is a famous university. He also studied law at a place called Middle Temple in London.

His Career as a Lawyer and Judge

Sir John Burland became a lawyer in January 1746. He quickly became very good at his job.

Over the years, he got many important roles:

  • In 1762, he became a Serjeant-at-Law. This was a special type of senior lawyer.
  • In 1764, he was made a King's Sergeant, meaning he advised the King on legal matters.
  • He also became the Recorder of Wells. A Recorder was a judge who worked in a town's court.
  • In 1774, he became a Baron of the Exchequer. This was a very high position as a judge in a court that dealt with the King's money and taxes.

When he became a Baron of the Exchequer, King George III made him a knight. This is why he was called "Sir" John Burland.

His Family and Later Life

Sir John Burland married a woman named Laetitia. She was the only daughter of William Berkeley Portman. The Portman family was very well-known in Somerset.

Sir John and Laetitia had one son, John Berkeley Burland. Their son later became a MP for Totnes in 1802. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the country's government.

Sir John Burland passed away suddenly in 1776. He was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. This is a very famous church where many important people are buried.
