John Campbell, 3rd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland (born 10 March 1696, died 26 January 1782) was an important Scottish noble, diplomat, and politician. Before he became an Earl, people called him Lord Glenorchy. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is part of the British Parliament, from 1727 to 1746. He was also a representative peer for Scotland.

Early Life and Education

John Campbell was born into an important family. His father was John Campbell, 2nd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland. His mother was Henrietta Villiers. When he was about 15 years old, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university in England, in 1711.

A Career in Politics and Diplomacy

John Campbell had a long and active career in government and international relations.

Working as a Diplomat

He started his diplomatic work as an Envoy to Denmark in 1718. An envoy is like a special messenger or representative for a country. Later, in 1731, he became the ambassador to the Russian Empire. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat representing their country in another nation.

Serving in Parliament

Campbell was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) several times. He represented the area of Saltash in 1727 and again in 1734. Later, he was elected as an MP for Orford in 1741.

Important Government Roles

In 1741, he became a Lord of the Admiralty. This meant he helped manage the British Navy. He held this position until the government changed the next year. In 1745, he was appointed Master of the Jewel Office. This role involved looking after the King's jewels and other valuable items. After taking this job, he left his seat in the House of Commons.

Becoming an Earl

When his father passed away on 23 February 1752, John Campbell became the 3rd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland. As an Earl, he also became a Scottish representative peer. This meant he could represent Scotland's nobility in the House of Lords, another part of the British Parliament.

Later Achievements

He continued to achieve great things. In 1756, he received a special degree called a DCL from the University of Oxford. From 1756 to 1765, he served as a Justice in Eyre. This was a legal role related to forests and royal lands. In 1776, he became Vice-Admiral of Scotland, a high-ranking naval position for Scotland.

His Family Life

Lord Breadalbane and Holland was married twice and had children.

First Marriage

On 20 February 1717, he married Lady Amabel de Grey. She was the daughter of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent. Lady Amabel passed away on 2 March 1726. They had two children together:

  • Henry Campbell (born around 1721, died 12 May 1727).
  • Jemima Campbell, 2nd Marchioness Grey, 4th Baroness Lucas.

Second Marriage

He married a second time to Arbella Pershall on 23 January 1730. They also had two children:

  • George Campbell, Lord Glenorchy (died 24 March 1744).
  • John Campbell, Lord Glenorchy (born 20 September 1738, died 14 November 1771). This John Campbell later married Willielma Maxwell.
