Which of these U.S. Presidents appeared on the television series "Laugh-In"? | |

At first, John Carpenter wasn't very interested in Millionaire. But one night, he watched it with friends and realized the questions weren't too hard. So, he decided to try out for the show. He answered all the try-out questions correctly and was on the show very quickly.
The show's host, Regis Philbin, said that John "cruised right through those first fourteen questions." This meant John reached the final question without using any of his lifelines. The last question, worth $1 million, was: "Which of these U.S. Presidents appeared on the television series Laugh-In?" The choices were Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford.
John used his "Phone-A-Friend" lifeline to call his dad. But he didn't need help with the answer. He just wanted to tell his dad he was about to win a million dollars! John later said he thought it would look too confident if he didn't use any lifelines, so he pretended to need help.
With his correct answer, John Carpenter became the first person in the world to win the top prize on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. He said the only question that made him nervous was about the location of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. He remembered the movie Tombstone and correctly answered 'Tombstone, Arizona'. After his big win, John thought about quitting his job. But he decided to keep working at the IRS. He explained that after taxes, the money wasn't enough to stop working forever. He also said that being famous had a bigger impact on his life than the money itself.
