John Cecil, 6th Earl of Exeter (born May 15, 1674 – died December 24, 1721) was an important British nobleman and politician. From 1678 to 1700, he was known as Lord Burleigh. He held a special rank called a peer and was also a Member of Parliament. This means he was part of the British government.
Early Life and Family
John Cecil was the son of John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter and Anne Cavendish. He grew up in a very influential family. His family had a long history in British politics and society.
A Career in Politics
John Cecil started his political journey early. From 1695 to 1700, he served as a Member of Parliament for Rutland. A Member of Parliament (MP) is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons. This is one part of the British Parliament.
In 1700, his father passed away. John then inherited the title of Earl of Exeter. This meant he became a member of the House of Lords. The House of Lords is the other part of the British Parliament. Members of the House of Lords are usually nobles who inherit their seats.
From 1712 to 1715, he also held another important role. He was the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland. A Lord Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county. It's a role that involves local leadership and military duties.
Marriages and Children
John Cecil married twice in his life. His first wife was Annabella Grey. She was the daughter of Ford Grey, 1st Earl of Tankerville. They married in 1697. Sadly, Annabella passed away just one year later in 1698.
In 1699, he married again. His second wife was Elizabeth Brownlow. She was the daughter of Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet. John and Elizabeth had several children together.
John Cecil died on Christmas Eve in December 1721. His eldest son from his second marriage, also named John, took over his titles. Lady Exeter, his second wife, passed away in 1723.
His second son, Brownlow Cecil, 8th Earl of Exeter, later became the 8th Earl. This happened after his older brother, John, passed away. John Cecil also had other sons named William, Francis, and Charles. He also had a daughter, Lady Elizabeth Aislabie. She married William Aislabie.
