John Charlton (also spelled Charleton or Cherleton) was the 3rd Baron Cherleton and 3rd Lord Charlton of Powys. He was born around 1336 and passed away in 1374.

John was the son of John Charleton, 2nd Baron Cherleton and Maud Mortimer. His marriage to Joan de Stafford was arranged when he was young, in 1343. Joan was the daughter of Ralph Stafford, 1st Earl of Stafford.

Becoming a Lord

John Charlton became the 3rd Lord Cherleton in 1360. This meant he inherited his father's important title and lands.

Serving the King

Records from 1372 show that John Charlton was a Knight Banneret. This was a special rank for a knight who could lead his own group of soldiers under his own banner.

He led 22 archers and other soldiers on a sea journey. This trip was part of a naval expedition led by King Edward III himself.

His Children

John Charlton had two sons. Both of them later became lords after him:

  • John became the 4th Lord Cherleton.
  • Edward became the 5th Lord Cherleton.
