John Charleton, also known as John Cherleton, was an important noble in medieval England and Wales. He was the 4th Baron Charleton of Powys. This meant he held a special title and had power over a region called Powys in Wales.
He was born on April 25, 1362, and lived until October 19, 1401. He became a baron when he was quite young, taking over from his father.
Becoming a Baron
John Charleton became the 4th Baron Cherleton and the 4th Lord of Powys on July 13, 1374. This happened after his father, John Charleton, 3rd Baron Cherleton, passed away. Being a "Baron" meant he was a powerful landowner. He also had a seat in the English Parliament.
Being a "Lord of Powys" meant he was the feudal ruler of a large area in Wales. He was responsible for governing this land and its people.
His Role in Wales
John Charleton also held an important job in the government. From March 20, 1387, he was the Justice of North Wales. This role meant he was a high-ranking official. He was in charge of making sure laws were followed in North Wales. He also helped keep peace and order in the region.
Family Life
Before March 1392, John Charleton married Alice FitzAlan. Alice was the daughter of Richard FitzAlan, 11th Earl of Arundel. Her mother was Elizabeth de Bohun.
John and Alice did not have any children together. This was important for who would become the next Baron.
Later Life and Legacy
John Charleton passed away on October 19, 1401, when he was 39 years old. He died at Powis Castle in Welshpool, which was a significant place for his family.
Because he had no children, his title and lands went to his younger brother. His brother, Edward, became the 5th Baron Charleton.
