John Codrington Warwick Bampfylde (born August 27, 1754 – died 1796 or 1797) was an English poet from the 1700s. He is best known for his book of poems called Sixteen Sonnets, published in 1778. This book even caught the attention of another famous poet, Robert Southey.

Who Was John Bampfylde?

John Bampfylde came from an important family in Devon, England. His father was Sir Richard Bampfylde, 4th Baronet. John went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge for his education.

Life in London

After his studies, John Bampfylde moved to London. He faced some money problems during his time there. He also had a connection with Joshua Reynolds, a very famous painter. John was interested in Mary Palmer, who was Reynolds's niece. However, Mary and Reynolds did not encourage this interest.

Later Life and Poetry

Later in his life, John Bampfylde became unwell and received care in London. He passed away from a lung illness called tuberculosis.

Even though he faced challenges, John Bampfylde left behind his collection of poems, Sixteen Sonnets. These poems are still remembered as his only published work.
