John Conyers (born March 6, 1650 – died March 10, 1725) was an English lawyer and politician. He was a member of the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons. He served for 30 years, from 1695 until his death in 1725.

Early Life and Education

John Conyers was born in Walthamstow, Essex. His father was Tristram Conyers, who was also a lawyer and a Member of Parliament. His mother was Winifred Gerard.

John went to Merchant Taylors' School from 1663 to 1665. After that, he studied at Queen’s College, Oxford starting in 1666 when he was 16 years old.

Becoming a Lawyer

After Oxford, John Conyers studied law at the Middle Temple. This is one of the places in London where lawyers are trained. He finished his law studies in 1672 and became a lawyer. This is called being "called to the bar." Around 1693, he became a King's Counsel (KC). This is a special title for experienced lawyers who advise the King or Queen.

In 1681, John Conyers married Mary Lee. She was the daughter of George Lee. They had a large family together.

Political Career

John Conyers became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1695. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made for the country.

Representing East Grinstead

John Conyers was first elected as the MP for East Grinstead. He served there until 1708.

Serving West Looe

In 1708, he was elected without opposition for West Looe. This meant no one ran against him, so he automatically won.

Return to East Grinstead

He returned to represent East Grinstead again in 1710 and 1713. He was elected without opposition both times. He continued to be elected for East Grinstead in 1715 and 1722. During these years, he often voted against the government's ideas.

John Conyers remained an MP until he passed away in 1725.

Family and Legacy

John Conyers died on March 10, 1725. He and his wife, Mary, had 16 children. After his death, his son, Edward Conyers, took over his role as the MP for East Grinstead.
