John Corry Wilson Daly (born March 24, 1796 – died April 1, 1878) was a very important person in early Canadian history. He was a politician, a businessperson (someone who owns and runs a business), and a militia officer (a part-time soldier). He also became the very first Mayor of Stratford, Ontario.

Who Was John Corry Wilson Daly?

John Corry Wilson Daly was born in Liverpool, England. He grew up and received his education in Ireland. When he was younger, he worked as a surgeon's assistant in the Royal Navy, which is the navy of the United Kingdom.

Moving to Stratford

In 1833, John Daly decided to move to a new place called Stratford. He quickly became a key figure in the growing community. He took on the role of post-master, which meant he was in charge of the mail. He also opened the very first store in the town.

Because of his important contributions, many people think of John Corry Wilson Daly as the founder of Stratford. Even though he wasn't the very first person to live there, he played a huge part in building the town and helping it grow.

A Mix-Up with Art

For a long time, people thought that John Daly had painted some beautiful watercolour pictures. These artworks were kept at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery on Prince Edward Island. However, in 2017, it was discovered that this was a mistake! There was no proof that John Daly ever painted. The artworks were actually done by another talented artist named Caroline Louisa Daly.
