Sir John Danvers (born 1540 – died 19 December 1594) was an important English politician. He lived in Dauntsey, Wiltshire, and Cirencester, Gloucestershire. He was known for his work in local government and as a Member of Parliament.

Early Life and Family

John Danvers was the oldest son of Sylvester Danvers. His family lived in Dauntsey, Wiltshire. John Danvers married Elizabeth, who was the daughter of John Nevill, 4th Lord Latimer. Through this marriage, he gained Danby Castle and other large properties in Yorkshire. He was made a knight in 1574, which meant he was given the title "Sir."

Public Service and Roles

Sir John Danvers held several important jobs in his time. These roles helped keep law and order and manage local areas.

Justice of the Peace

From about 1573, Sir John was a Justice of the Peace (JP) for Wiltshire. A Justice of the Peace was a local official. They helped keep the peace and dealt with minor legal cases. He also became a JP for Gloucestershire around 1583.

High Sheriff

He served as High Sheriff of Wiltshire multiple times. These years were 1574–75, 1585–86, and 1593. The High Sheriff was a very important official in a county. They were responsible for law enforcement and collecting taxes. Sir John also served as High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1593–94.
