Early Life and Family Background
John Devereux was born around 1464. He was the oldest son of Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers of Chartley. His mother was Anne Ferrers. She was the heir to the earlier Barons Ferrers of Chartley. This meant she would inherit their lands and titles.
A Father's Fate in Battle
John's father, Walter, fought for King Richard III of England. This was during a very important battle called the Battle of Bosworth Field. The battle took place on 22 August 1485. Sadly, John's father died fighting in this battle. King Richard III also died, and his opponent, Henry VII of England, became the new king.
Because John's father fought against the new king, his lands were taken away. This was called being "attainted." It meant his family lost their rights to his property.
Becoming a Baron
In 1486, John inherited his mother's properties. His father had held these lands during his lifetime. John was then called to join the Parliament. This happened on 1 September 1487. He was known as Baron Ferrers.
Regaining Family Lands
Once in Parliament, John asked for his father's lands to be returned. His request was granted. In 1489, he officially received most of his father's lands back. Some lands were still held by his father's widow. John remained loyal to King Henry VII for the rest of his life.
Marriages and Children
John Devereux married twice. His first wife was Cecily Bourchier. She was the daughter of William Bourchier, Viscount Bourchier. Her mother was Lady Anne Woodville.
John's Children
John and Cecily had two children together:
- Walter Devereux, 1st Viscount Hereford (born 1488 – died 17 September 1558)
- Anne Devereux (born around 1490). She married three times. Her husbands were Sir David Owen, Nicholas Gaynesford, and John Harman.
Cecily, John's first wife, passed away before June 1493. She was buried in London. John then married his second wife, Elizabeth Langham. She was the daughter of Robert Langham.
Later Life and Passing
John Devereux died on either 3 or 7 May 1501. His son, Walter, then inherited his title and lands.
