John Dubh MacLean, 1st Laird of Morvern was an important leader who started several branches of the Maclean family, including the Macleans of Kinlochaine, Drimnin, and Pennycross. The name "Dubh" means "black" in Scottish Gaelic.

His Early Life

John Dubh MacLean was the second son of Hector Mor Maclean, 12th Clan Chief. His father was a powerful leader of the Maclean clan, which is a large family group in Scotland.

Family and Descendants

John Dubh was married three times. With his second wife, Catherine, he had a son named Allan Maclean of Ardtornish.

Allan's family line continued through his son, Lachlan Maclean of Calgary. Lachlan's son was Allan Maclean of Grulin, and his son was Charles of Kilunaig.

The Pennycross Macleans

Charles's son was Alexander Maclean, 1st Laird of Pennycross. Alexander became a doctor and married Una in 1700. Una was the daughter of Alexander MacGillivray of Pennyghael. Alexander and Una had two children: Archibald, who would take over from his father, and Catherine. Catherine later married Major Donald MacLean, a soldier in the Royal Scots regiment.

Alexander's son, Archibald Maclean, 2nd Laird of Pennycross, was born in 1761 and passed away in 1830. People thought highly of Archibald. He was a major in the 3rd regiment of Argyleshire fencibles, which were local defense forces. He also served as a deputy lieutenant for the county, helping to manage local affairs.

Archibald married Alicia, and they had a large family of nine sons and three daughters. Many of them grew up to do important things. Some of their children who reached adulthood were Alexander, Allan Thomas, Charles James, Mary, John, Juliana, Hector, Lachlan, and Archibald Donald.
