About John Barnes
Early Life and Education
John Barnes was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in the Union–Miles Park neighborhood of the city.
He went to Case Western Reserve University. There, he earned a special degree called a Master of Science in business management. This degree helped him learn how to manage businesses.
Career in Public Service
Before becoming a state representative, John Barnes worked for the city of Cleveland. He was the director of the Department of Community Relations. This job involved helping different groups of people in the community work together.
He also worked as a senior tax auditor and investigator. This meant he helped check taxes for the city.
Serving in the Ohio House
John Barnes first served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. After two terms, he decided not to run again. Another politician, Michael DeBose, took his place.
In 2010, Michael DeBose could not run for the seat again because of term limits. Term limits mean a politician can only serve for a certain number of years. John Barnes then decided to try and get his old seat back.
He ran in the Democratic primary election and won against several opponents. He then ran unopposed in the general election, meaning no one ran against him. He was sworn into his former seat on January 3, 2011.
During his time in the Ohio House, Barnes was part of several important committees. These committees help decide on new laws.
Barnes was re-elected without opposition in 2012. In 2014, he faced a challenger in the primary election but won with 54% of the votes. He then ran unopposed in the general election again.
In 2021, John Barnes filed to run for a seat in the U.S. Congress. This was for a special election in Ohio's 11th congressional district.
