John Ernest Irving CM (born January 1, 1932 – died July 21, 2010) was an important Canadian businessman. He was the youngest son of K. C. Irving, who started the famous Irving family businesses. People often called him Jack.
Jack Irving was born in New Brunswick. He shared ownership and responsibility for the large group of companies known as the Irving Group of Companies with his brothers, J.K. and Arthur.
The Irving Family Businesses
After their father passed away in 1992, the ownership of the Irving companies was divided among the brothers. Each brother took charge of different parts of the family business.
- James K. Irving (J.K.) became responsible for Brunswick News. He also oversaw J.D. Irving, Limited. This company works in many areas. These include forestry, making paper, and building supplies. It also deals with frozen food, transportation, and shipbuilding.
- Arthur Irving took charge of Irving Oil. This part of the business includes gas stations and oil refineries. It also handles oil tankers and places where oil is stored and sent out.
- John E. Irving (Jack) was responsible for companies that build things. This included construction, engineering, and making concrete and steel parts. He also managed Commercial Properties, Source Atlantic, and Acadia Broadcasting, Limited.
All the companies within the Irving group work closely together. They often buy services and products from each other. This helps them keep profits within their own operations.
A Change in Personality
Jack Irving was known for being thoughtful. He was often seen as less aggressive than his older brothers in business. He preferred to listen carefully and let his brothers do most of the talking. Many people believe this change happened after an event in 1982.
While he was found safe, this event made him think more about life. It led to a noticeable shift in his personality. He became more reflective and calm.
Supporting Arts and Nature
Jack Irving cared deeply about nature. He worked to protect important natural and cultural areas. He was also a strong supporter of the arts. He helped many artists and art groups in Atlantic Canada.
Jack Irving passed away at 78 years old on July 21, 2010. This was after a short illness. He was survived by his wife, Suzanne Cameron, and his children. His son, John K. F. Irving, took over his business interests.
