Early Life and Education
John Reinhardt was born in Glade Spring, Virginia. He grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. After finishing high school, he went to Knoxville College and graduated in 1939.
He then went to the University of Chicago to study English. However, he paused his studies to serve in World War II. After the war, he continued his education. He earned his doctorate degree in English from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1950.
A Career in Diplomacy
John Reinhardt had a long and important career in government. From 1971 to 1975, he served as the American ambassador to Nigeria. An ambassador is a top diplomat who represents their country in another nation.
After his time in Nigeria, he took on other key roles. From 1975 to 1977, he was the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. This job involved explaining U.S. foreign policy to the public.
Later, from 1977 to 1980, he became the director of the United States Information Agency (USIA). The USIA was a government agency that shared information about the United States with people around the world.
Later Years and Activism
After his government service, John Reinhardt continued to be active. From 1980 to 1987, he was a member of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors. The Peabody Awards recognize excellence in television, radio, and online media.
He also became a professor of political science at the University of Vermont. He taught there from 1987 to 1991. Political science is the study of how governments work.
In 2004, John Reinhardt joined a group called Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change. This group was made up of former diplomats and military leaders. They spoke out against the Iraq War. John Reinhardt passed away on February 18, 2016.
