John Edward Stead (born October 11, 1851 – died October 31, 1923) was an important British scientist. He was a metallurgist, which means he studied metals and how they behave. Stead was elected to the Royal Society in 1903, which is a very respected group for scientists. He worked for a company called Bolckow Vaughan and even became the President of the Iron and Steel Institute.

John Edward Stead had a brother named William Thomas Stead. William was a well-known newspaper editor. Sadly, he died when the famous ship, the RMS Titanic, sank in April 1912.

John Stead's Amazing Achievements

John Edward Stead was recognized for his excellent work with metals. He received three special university degrees called honorary doctorates. These are given to people who have done great things, even if they didn't study at that university.

He also became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a big honor for scientists in the United Kingdom. In 1901, he was given the Bessemer Gold Medal by the Iron and Steel Institute. This medal is a very important award in the world of metal science.

A Lasting Legacy: The Stead Memorial Hospital

John Edward Stead and his wife, Mary, did a lot of good work in their community. They helped people in the Teesside area of England. After John Stead passed away in 1923, his home was turned into a hospital.

His house, called Everdon villa, was in a town called Redcar. It became the Stead Memorial Hospital and opened its doors in 1929. Over time, it grew to be the main hospital for the town. The hospital helped many people for many years. However, it eventually closed in 2010. By 2013, the building was being taken down.
