John Egan was a talented Irish maker of musical instruments. He worked from 1804 to 1838 and is often called the "father of the modern Irish harp". He created a new kind of Irish harp that was very popular and helped bring this ancient instrument back to life.

Who Was John Egan?

John Egan was an important figure in Ireland's musical history. He lived and worked during the early 1800s. His skill in crafting musical instruments, especially harps, made a lasting impact.

The Modern Irish Harp

Around the year 1800, the traditional way of playing the ancient Irish harp was slowly fading away. John Egan stepped in and changed things. He designed a completely new and beautiful type of Irish harp. This new design was very successful and became the foundation for all future efforts to revive the Irish harp. It helped keep the wonderful sound and tradition of the Irish harp alive for generations to come.

Egan's Clever Innovations

Traditional Irish harps had some limitations. John Egan found smart ways to improve them. He added a special "dital tuning mechanism" to his harps. This mechanism allowed players to change the pitch of the strings more easily, similar to how pedal harps worked. He also used flexible catgut strings, which are made from animal intestines (like sheep or goat), instead of the stiffer metal strings often used before. These changes made his harps more versatile and easier to play. He called these new creations "portables" because they were easier to move around.

Rare and Valuable Instruments

John Egan made about 2,000 harps during his career. Today, only 37 of these special instruments are known to still exist. While they might not be as famous or expensive as a Stradivarius violin, Egan's harps are considered classic and important instruments. They are highly valued by collectors and musicians. Some of his harps have been sold for as much as US$24,000, showing their historical and musical importance.
