Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John Evelyn (1591–1664) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government, at different times between 1628 and 1660. He was involved in the English Civil War, a big conflict in England, and supported the side of Parliament, though he wasn't always sure about it.

Early Life and Beginnings

John Evelyn was born in 1591. His father was also named Sir John Evelyn. He was baptised in Kingston upon Thames on October 20, 1591. Later, he went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1606.

As he grew up, Evelyn became involved in important trading groups. He joined the Virginia Company in 1612, which was involved in setting up colonies in America. In 1624, he became a member of the East India Company, a powerful company that traded with countries in Asia. From 1624, he also worked as a JP for Surrey, which meant he helped keep law and order in the area.

A Career in Parliament

In 1628, John Evelyn was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Bletchingley. He served in Parliament until 1629. At that time, King Charles I decided to rule England without Parliament for eleven years.

Evelyn was also involved in supplying gunpowder to the government. In 1628, he was owed money by the King for this work.

In November 1640, Evelyn was elected MP for Bletchingley again. This Parliament was known as the Long Parliament. He was given the title of "Sir" when he was knighted on June 25, 1641. He continued to serve in Parliament until 1648. During this time, he helped with important tasks like collecting taxes and managing property that had been taken by the government.

Later Years

After the English Civil War, in 1660, Evelyn was once again elected as an MP for Bletchingley. This Parliament was called the Convention Parliament.

Sir John Evelyn passed away at the age of 71. He was buried in Godstone, Surrey, on January 18, 1664.

Evelyn was married to Thomasine Heynes. Their son, also named John, later became a baronet, which is a special title of honour.
