John Wilson FitzPatrick, 1st Baron Castletown (born September 23, 1811 – died January 22, 1883) was an important Irish politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party in the United Kingdom. Before 1842, he was known as John Wilson.

Early Life and Family

John Wilson FitzPatrick was born in 1811. He was the son of John FitzPatrick, 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory. He attended Eton, a famous school in England.

In 1842, John inherited parts of his father's lands in Ireland. At this time, he officially changed his last name to FitzPatrick. This was done through a special permission called a Royal licence.

A Career in Politics

John FitzPatrick had a long and active career in politics. He worked to represent the people of Ireland in the British government.

Serving the Public

In 1836, he was chosen as the High Sheriff of Queen's County. This was an important local role. A High Sheriff was responsible for law and order in their county.

He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1837. This is a main part of the UK Parliament. He represented an area called Queen's County. He served in Parliament for several terms:

  • From 1837 to 1841
  • From 1847 to 1852
  • From 1865 to 1869

Becoming a Baron

In 1848, John FitzPatrick became a member of the Irish Privy Council. This was a group of advisors to the monarch.

In 1869, he was given a special title. He became a Baron, which is a type of noble title. His full title was Baron Castletown, of Upper Ossory. This meant he could also sit in the House of Lords, another part of the UK Parliament.

Besides his work in Parliament, he also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Queen's County. He held this position from 1855 until his death in 1883. A Lord Lieutenant was the monarch's personal representative in a county.

His Family Life

John FitzPatrick married Augusta Mary Douglas in 1830. She was the daughter of Reverend Archibald Douglas.

Together, they had one son and six daughters. John FitzPatrick passed away in 1883 when he was 71 years old. His only son, Bernard, took over his title as the 2nd Baron Castletown. Lady Castletown died later, in 1899.
