John Foldsone was an English artist who lived a long time ago. He was known for painting portraits, which are pictures of people. He died in 1784.

Who Was John Foldsone?

John Foldsone became well-known for painting smaller pictures of people. An art writer named Edward Edwards said that Foldsone's paintings were not super fancy. However, they looked enough like the person to be very popular. People liked them because they were also quite affordable.

He was a very fast painter! He would often arrive at someone's house in the morning. He would paint their picture and finish it before the day was over. If they lived far away, he might even stay for dinner.

Showing His Art

John Foldsone lived in London, a big city in England. He showed his paintings at important art shows. He exhibited his work at the Society of Artists in 1769 and 1770. Later, he showed his art at the Royal Academy from 1771 to 1783.

Besides portraits, he also painted other kinds of pictures. These included religious scenes, like a "Madonna" (a painting of Mary, the mother of Jesus). He also painted "mythological subjects," which are scenes from old stories about gods and heroes.

Some of his paintings were turned into prints. For example, his pictures of two children, Elizabeth and John Burges Haffey, were made into prints using a special method called mezzotint. Another painting, called Female Lucubration, was also made into a print this way.

Family and Legacy

John Foldsone passed away in 1784. He had a wife and children. His oldest daughter, Anne Mee, also became a famous artist. She was known for painting tiny portraits called miniatures.
