Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dr. John Grieve (born 1753, died 1805) was a Scottish doctor. He became a very important physician to the royal family of Russia, known as the House of Romanov. He also helped build good friendships between Scotland and Russia.

Early Life and Education

John Grieve was born in 1753 in Peeblesshire, a place south of Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Dr. James Grieve, was also a doctor. Interestingly, his father had worked for Empress Elizabeth of Russia before him.

John studied medicine at Glasgow University. He earned his medical degree in 1777.

Working in Russia

In 1778, Dr. Grieve began working for the Imperial Russian Army. He was first based with the Voronezh Division.

He returned to Britain in 1783 because he wasn't feeling well. While in Britain, he became known for trying to bring a Russian drink called koumiss to the country. Koumiss is a drink made from fermented mare's milk.

In 1798, Dr. Grieve went back to Russia. He became the personal doctor for Tsar Paul I. After Tsar Paul I passed away in 1801, Dr. Grieve continued to serve the new ruler, Tsar Alexander I. He also cared for Tsar Alexander I's wife, Empress Elizabeth.

Achievements and Recognition

Dr. Grieve was recognized for his medical work and knowledge. In 1784, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a group that brings together smart people who have achieved great things in science and learning.

Later, in 1794, he was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. This is another very old and respected group for scientists. In 1786, he moved from Edinburgh to London.

His Family

Dr. John Grieve had a wife named Rebecca (also known as Sophia). They lived in St Petersburg, Russia. They had nine children together. Sadly, one of their sons, Alexander, was born in February 1804 but only lived for a few days.

His sister, Jean Grieve, married another doctor named James Mounsey. Dr. Mounsey also worked for the Russian royal family, just like John Grieve.

Dr. Grieve passed away from a stroke in St Petersburg, Russia, on December 21, 1805.
