John Hamar Hill (born December 28, 1912 – died July 21, 1998) was a brave British officer. He served in the Royal Air Force (RAF). He reached the high rank of Group Captain. He is best known for leading No. 222 Squadron RAF during the important Battle of Britain. This battle was a key part of the Second World War.
John Hill's Early Life
John Hamar Hill was born on December 28, 1912. He went to school at Dover College. While at school, he was a prefect. This meant he helped teachers with rules and order. He was also very good at playing sports.
Serving in the Royal Air Force
John Hill joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1932. By 1940, he was in charge of No. 504 Squadron RAF. This squadron flew Hurricane fighter planes.
During the war, he was shot down over France. He was hurt and, by mistake, was thought to be a spy. After he got better, he was given command of No. 222 Squadron RAF. His squadron flew Spitfires. They faced many challenges during the Battle of Britain.
Later in the war, Hill became a chief flying instructor. He taught new pilots at No. 57 Operational Training Unit. Then, he became the leader at two RAF bases: RAF Exeter and RAF Church Stanton. In 1942, he was recognized for his bravery. He was sent to New Zealand to work as an Air Staff Officer.
As the war ended, Hill was at the main Allied headquarters. He was promoted to Group Captain. In 1946, he received a special award. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
After the War
After the Second World War, John Hill continued his career. In 1950, he worked with the French Air Ministry. He ended his time in the RAF in important roles. He was the Director of Command and Staff Training. He also served as a Senior Personnel Staff Officer.
John Hill retired from the RAF in 1960. After retiring, he worked for the Society of British Aerospace Companies. He also helped organize important guests at the Farnborough Air Show. He passed away in 1998.
