John Hampson (1760–1819) was an English writer. He wrote about many different topics.

John Hampson was born in 1760. His parents were followers of Methodism, a Christian movement started by John Wesley. Both John Hampson and his father became preachers for John Wesley.

Early Life and Education

Around 1784, John Hampson decided to leave the Methodist movement. He went to St. Edmund Hall, a college at Oxford University, in July 1785. He earned his first degree (B.A.) in 1791 and a master's degree (M.A.) in 1792.

Joining the Church of England

After his studies, John Hampson became a priest in the Church of England. He started working in Sunderland. Around 1801, he became the main priest, or rector, of Sunderland.

His Important Writings

John Hampson wrote several books and sermons. His most important work was a three-volume book called Memoirs of the late Rev. John Wesley, A.M., with a Review of his Life and Writings, and a History of Methodism from its Commencement in 1729 to the Present Time. This book was published in Sunderland in 1791. It told the story of John Wesley's life and the history of Methodism from its beginning. A German version of this book was also published in 1793.

Hampson also wrote other books, including:

  • A Blow at the Root of Pretended Calvinism or Real Antinomianism (1788)
  • Observations on the Present War, the Projected Invasion, and a Decree of the National Convention for the Emancipation of the Slaves in the French Colonies (around 1793). This book discussed the war at the time and a French law about freeing enslaved people.
  • The Poetics of Marcus Hieronymus Vida, Bishop of Alba; with Translations from the Latin of Dr. Louth, Mr. Gray, and others (1793). This book included translations of Latin poems.

John Hampson passed away on December 7, 1819, in Sunderland.
