John Hastings, 2nd Baron Hastings (born 29 September 1287 – died 20 January 1325) was an important English nobleman from the Middle Ages. He held the title of Baron, which meant he was a powerful lord. He was also the lord of a place called the Manor of Hunningham.
His Family Story
John Hastings was the son of John Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings. From his father, he also received the title of Baron Abergavenny. His grandfather was Henry de Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings. John's mother was named Isabel. She was the daughter of William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke, another important noble.
A Life in Service
John Hastings was a knight and a leader. He fought in the First War of Scottish Independence. This was a big conflict where England and Scotland fought for control. John served under King Edward II during these wars. He was also in charge of Kenilworth Castle, which was a very important fortress at the time. Being a governor meant he was responsible for the castle's defense and management.
What Happened Next?
Lord Hastings passed away in January 1325. He was 37 years old when he died. His wife, Juliana de Leybourne, was still alive. After his death, his son, Laurence, took over his title as Baron. Later, in 1339, Laurence was given an even higher title and became the Earl of Pembroke.
