Laurence de Hastings, 1st Earl of Pembroke (born March 20, 1319 – died August 20, 1348) was an important English nobleman. He held several special titles, including the 1st Earl of Pembroke. He was also known as Baron Abergavenny and Baron Hastings. Laurence lived during the reigns of King Edward II and King Edward III.

Who Was Laurence de Hastings?

Laurence de Hastings was a powerful figure in medieval England. As an Earl, he was a high-ranking noble who owned much land and had influence. He played a part in the history of England during the 1300s.

His Family and Early Life

Laurence was the son of John Hastings, 2nd Baron Hastings and Juliana Leybourne. He was born in a place called Allesley in Warwickshire, England. He was also christened, or baptized, there on the very same day he was born.

Becoming an Earl

Laurence had a special connection to the Earls of Pembroke. He was the great-grandson of William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke. Because of his family connections and the lands he received, he was given the title of Earl of Pembroke in October 1339. This was a new creation of the earldom, meaning he was the first to hold this specific title in his family line.

His Marriage and Son

Laurence de Hastings married Lady Agnes Mortimer. She was born in 1317 and passed away in 1368. Agnes was the daughter of Roger de Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, another very important noble. Laurence and Agnes had one son together:

  • John Hastings, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (1347–1375)

His Final Years

Laurence de Hastings died in 1348. He passed away at Abergavenny Castle, a historic castle in Wales. He was buried in the Priory Church of St Mary, Abergavenny, a beautiful old church in the same town.
