John Hawksford (born October 5, 1806 – died September 3, 1887) was a very successful and wealthy lawyer in the town of Wolverhampton, England. He was an important member of the Catholic Church community there. He also became the Mayor of Wolverhampton in 1863, making him the first Catholic to hold that important position.

A Champion for the Catholic Church

John Hawksford became a Catholic when he was 26 years old. By the late 1840s, he was a very important person in the Catholic community of Wolverhampton. He wanted to help build a new Catholic church for the town.

He spent £2,000 of his own money to buy land for the church. This was a lot of money back then! He worked hard to get the church built. The new church was named St Mary and St John.

His Role in Politics

John Hawksford served as the Mayor of Wolverhampton from 1863 to 1864. This was a big achievement. He was the first Catholic person to become Mayor of the town.

His Family Life

John Hawksford was born on October 5, 1806, in Aston, Warwickshire. His parents were Samuel Hawksford and Elizabeth Cope. He moved to Wolverhampton in 1821.

He became a Catholic around the time he got married. He and his first wife had six children together. Sadly, his first wife passed away in 1849. John Hawksford married again in 1853. He did not have any more children after his second marriage. He died on September 3, 1887.
