John Henniker, 1st Baron Henniker (born June 15, 1724 – died April 18, 1803), was an important British businessman and politician. He was known by different names during his life, including Sir John Henniker, 2nd Baronet.

John Henniker was born in 1724. His father, also named John Henniker, was a merchant from London who traded with Russia.
His Business and Political Life
John Henniker followed in his father's footsteps and became a merchant. He traded in things like leather and furs. He also became involved in politics.
In 1758, he was chosen as the High Sheriff of Essex. This was an important role in the county. Later, in 1761, he was elected to the House of Commons, which is part of the British Parliament. Getting elected was quite expensive back then!
He represented the area of Sudbury from 1761 to 1768. After that, he represented Dover from 1774 to 1784. In 1779, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a group for important scientists.
Family and Titles
John Henniker married Anne Major. Her father was Sir John Major, 1st Baronet. In 1782, John Henniker inherited his father-in-law's title and became the second Baronet of Worlingsworth Hall.
In 1800, he received an even higher honor. He was made a Baron in the Peerage of Ireland, which meant he became Lord Henniker. His title was "Baron Henniker, of Stratford-upon-Slaney".
Later Life and Legacy
Lord Henniker passed away in April 1803 when he was 78 years old. He was buried in Rochester Cathedral. You can still see a very large monument there dedicated to him.
His oldest son, John, took over his titles. His youngest son, Sir Brydges Trecothick Henniker, became a high-ranking officer in the Army. He also received his own Baronet title in 1813.
There is even a town in the United States named after him: Henniker, New Hampshire.
